Mthoko Luthuli (CA) SA

Mthoko was a Partner at Deloitte & Touche (Deloitte), Audit Division for the period March 2008 to July 2020 and has twenty-one cumulative years of experience in auditing, financial management advisory and business development where he serviced multinational groups and SMEs statutory audits in South Africa. Mthoko was seconded to the United States of America for three months in 2002 after finishing his articles and returned to Deloitte as an audit manager from May 2002 to December 2003.

In January 2004, Mthoko co-founded and was an executive director of Siyaya Management Services (Pty) Ltd (Siyaya), a business advisory company, which merged with Deloitte in March 2008.  While a director at Siyaya, Mthoko was involved in different financial management consulting services in several municipalities around the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Ithala Development Finance Corporation. Mthoko served as an acting Chief Financial Officer of The Playhouse Company for a period of 6 months in 2004.

On his return to Deloitte, Mthoko served on a number of audits which included regulated industries in the higher education sector and medical aid schemes. Through working in the higher education sector, Mthoko gained an extensive understanding of risks and challenges in that sector, as well as the applicable laws and regulations, such as the Higher Education Act. In working on the audits of medical schemes, Mthoko gained experience and an understanding of the risks facing this industry as well as laws such as the Medical Schemes Act and the regulations issued by the Council for Medical Schemes.

Mthoko audited a number of state owned entities and municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape where he gained extensive experience in the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) and financial reporting frameworks; such as Generally Recognised Accounting Practice (GRAP). In addition Mthoko has performed external audits of JSE Listed, multinational groups and SMEs as an audit partner from which he gained experience in the applicable laws and regulations as well as International Financial Reporting Standards. Reporting to group auditors in the United States of America has allowed Mthoko to obtain a working knowledge of SEC and PCAOB requirements.

Other roles that Mthoko has played in his career:

  • Treasurer in 2005 of Izandla Zothando (Centocow) – NGO focused on HIV/Aids awareness, providing medication to people living with HIV, assisting orphans and child-headed homes and home-based care.
  • Chairperson of the Deloitte KZN foundation between 2008 and 2009. The Deloitte Foundation is the Deloitte unit responsible for social responsibility.
  • Transformation champion in the Deloitte Audit and Assurance Division in KZN.

Mthoko is married to Nozipho and they have four children. Mthoko is deeply committed to his family and the community in which he grew up where he plays an active role as a respected community member.
